Product Description
Columbia River M16-14 Tactical Knife M16-14ZSF Desert Big Dog, The service men and women in the Middle East require cutting tools that can stand up to the harsh demands of the desert. The Carson Desert Tactical Folders have been developed specifically to blend into the desert environment. The special M16 Zytel models feature the super rigid InterFrame build with 420J2 stainless steel liners, threaded stainless steel back spacers, and Desert Camo pattern Zytel scales. Blades are non-reflective bead blast finished AUS 4 stainless steel. They blend and almost disappear in the desert. M16-14ZSF Special Forces. The tactical SF models feature two Carson Flippers, resulting in a true hilt when the blade is opened. The Big Dog Zytel version has a 3.875" (9.8 cm) blade and full size handle with a pommel which is exceptionally powerful in tactical situations. Weight is a hefty 6.3 oz. (179 g). Each M16-14SF comes with two stainless steel Teflon-plated clothing/gear clips, extra screws and a Torx tool, allowing four position carry on belts or webbing - tip up, tip down, left or right. Please note: These knifes are not designed for tip-up in-pocket carry. All models feature the patented Lake And Walker Knife Safety (LAWKS), which effectively turns the folders into fixed blades when actuated. One-hand opening and closing is quick and smooth, the result of precision tolerances and Teflon bearings at the blade pivot. The dual ambidextrous thumb studs with checkered surfaces provide instant access in any circumstance. All blades have Combined Razor-Sharp and Triple-Point Serrated edges. 5 out of 5 stars Great Knives   August 10, 2006

I picked up one of these while working in Baghdad, Iraq. I have used lots of knives over the years and this is one of the best - the locking mechanism gives the knife almost the strength and safety of a fixed blade. I've carried this knife daily since 2004 and as of yet have had to sharpen it. Very comfortable ergonomics make it comfortable to use, especailly for extended cutting

Well made and designed. keeps a sharp edge. very fast to open. I use it every day. Everyone I know whom handles it wants their own.

4 out of 5 stars Very well-made   November 2, 2009

I really like this knife. Like all CRKT knives (I own several) the design and construction are first-rate. Opens easily, locks securely, cuts very well. The only reason that I deducted one star is this: I wanted this knife for pocket-carry. If you are thinking of doing the same, you should know two things.

1) CRKT clearly state that this knife should never be used for "tip-up in-pocket carry". That is true, but I would add that it should also never be used for tip-down pocket carry either. I thought that I could carry it this way, and it soon corrected my faulty reasoning by coming slightly open in my pocket and spearing my fingertip as I was pulling my keys from the same pocket. I believe the problem is caused by the two "Carson flippers" that form the hilt finger-guards when the blade is open. These also protrude when the blade is closed, and can be caused to move by pressing against the side of the pocket or against your hand/arm when you put your hand in or are pulling it out. It doesn't take much pressure on the top of the flipper to slide the tip of the knife out of the handle.

2) Much less important, the knife is a bit large, at least for typical jeans front-pockets. I have pants with front pockets that are wider than that, and the knife is not a bother in them. I am going to buy one of this knife's smaller brothers without the dual flippers for pocket carry.

This knife is really better suited for belt-carry, I think. Anyway, that's my two cents.

I purchased this item for personal protection, here in Iraq. It turns out this knife or the others in this style from CRKT seem to be quite popular with the military.
