5 out of 5 stars 1095 perfection, thicker than the rest!,   February 5, 2009

It is the perfect size for all round use and clearing out fire lanes for hunting, sharpened right up with a bastard file, then finished off with 320grit sandpaper to clear off the wire edge, took about ten minutes to get it hair popping sharp(the easiest way to sharpen a machete)gave it a nice convex, and added a one inch chisel grind on a small belt sander for making fuzz sticks right above the tang in the unused portion of the blade.

5 out of 5 stars The splitting EDGE, ONTARIO MACHETE review   June 8, 2009
C. Brackett (Livingston,MT USA)
I really like this product,1095 is my favorite high carbon steel and ontario knife company one of the best commercial blade manufacturers in the good old USA. the blade is one eighth inch thick, perfect for its 12 inch length. After putting a convex grind on the edge i put this baby to the test. Nearly an hour into chopping and splitting wood using a baton on the back edge of the blade(the baton made of wood of course)the machete was still going strong, handle tight, edge only slightly dulled.I made a leather sheath for it and now it accompanies me and miss Alice on our weekly treks in the rockies. The price was right, the product well made, nothing fancy, no bells or whisels, PERFECT! I love it!!!!THANKS!! DB.

4 out of 5 stars Be prepared to really work at getting it sharp   August 27, 2009
Bargain Finder (Los Angeles, CA)
It's certainly a nice compact sturdy item. But it comes without an 'edge'...at least mine did. And I worked for a long time with a manual knife sharpener and grinding stones, but I just couldn't get it even slightly sharp. So, I had to take it to a sharpening 'shop' where, with a grinding wheel, they put on a decent edge. (Maybe the problem was because the blade material was so sturdy and tough that it caused this difficulty). I just hope that it holds an 'edge' longer...since it took so long to 'get' it sharp.

4 out of 5 stars Not easy to sharpen, and not nearly 12 inch of cutting edge   January 5, 2010
consumer9277 (Doral, FL USA)
As noted before, the blade comes without a sharp finish edge. The blade is a full tang 1095 carbon steel with a black oxide coating, not noted in the description. And as commented, it is a hard steel that is not easy to sharpen, but I expect that by the same token, it will hold an edge well. There is just a little flex to the blade so I don't expect to chop any sizeable tree trunks. The useable blade is actually only 9 inches, with the last 2 1/2 inches of the blade being a full-width extension of the tang, something like a ricasso. That is too much lost blade for my liking, so I will have a shop grind part of this "ricasso" to an edge. Had I known this I would have gotten an 18 inch model to get at least 15 inches of real blade. Otherwise, it has the appearance and characteristics of a sturdy, high quality tool that I expect to give good service for a very long time.
