| Customer Reviews: Black out! April 30, 2010 Richard D. Ingram 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This stealthy little knife is super cool. Every one should own one of these knives. I think the newer model delica's are better in every detail compared to the older delica 3's. The VG10 steel is quite formidable in the fact that it is easy to get a sharp edge after hard use and it will hold a sharp edge for a decent amount of time. The steel liners do add weight but they give the knife a good heft and solid feel. This knife is by no means heavy at all. The construction is much more solid than previous versions of this model. This spydie is completely black through and through. You cannot go wrong with this knife, it is all black and all cool!
Better handle shape, softer blade than the old ones March 27, 2010 A Customer (USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I had several of this model in the version made from about 1998-2005, and now I also have 2 of the current version. Back then, every knife collector had 2 of them, and most of us recommended it as the knife everyone should have.
I prefer this newer handle shape, which was introduced several years ago. Nice improvement. The lock is solid, and the pocket clip can be conveniently moved to any of 4 positions.
However, the blade doesn't stay sharp as long as the previous version. The blade is a little bit softer, bringing it down to an "average" Japanese blade from its previous position of above average. It's still good, but no longer uniquely so. Most blades made of ATS55 or 154cm are just as good as VG10.
It is heavier now. The fiberglass/nylon handle has steel liners inside it. Some claim strength and stability as benefits, but the blade still wiggles a little and having read knife forums for many years, bent or broken handles has never been a problem. It isn't "too" heavy, but it's more like average now, while the old version was a good option for anyone wanting to remain as light as possible.
One problem Spyderco sometimes has is with knives requiring washers. The old Delica, with its all-plastic handle, didn't need washers (the handle itself was good enough). The new one uses thin washers between the blade and the steel liners and sometimes, if only rarely, Spyderco will forget to use one, or even use too many. If you get one of these and it doesn't open as smoothly as you expect, check to see if this was done correctly.
It's still a pretty good knife, but the price is slightly higher and the quality, despite added features, is a tiny bit lower, and the competition is better than 10 years ago. I used to describe the old model as the absolute best deal for a knife. Now I will only say that it's a pretty good knife, but you may want to look around for other brands and models which are either a better deal for your needs, more to your aesthetic preferences, or just better overall. Definitely don't buy a Spyderco Delica just because it has a reputation for being the best, because that is no longer as clear as it once was.
A few possible alternatives:
Randall Folder - Much cheaper, very solid and ergonomic (kind of large).
Buck Vantage series - Avid or Pro models have good steel (Sandvick 13C26 and Crucible s30v), nice handle shape, and are manufactured with high precision. Pass on the cheapest "Select" models. Buck also has a good record of hardening/tempering blades "just right", thanks to their reliance on industry expert Paul Bos. Thus, a blade of s30v from Buck is often better than the same from other manufacturers.
Kabar Dozier series - The handle shape is pretty basic, and the AUS8 steel is good if not as good as the latest high-end stuff, but they are still much better than generic knives, have nice thick blade stock ground down to a thin cutting edge, are available in several blade shapes and handle colors, and are extremely cheap.
LOADS of different Columbia River models - CRKT still makes some really low quality stuff, but they also have a lot of really high quality stuff now. Many of their knives use "8Cr14MoV" steel, which is a modern Chinese steel and rivals some of the better US and Japanese stuff. Benchmade and Spyderco have both used it for many of their Chinese knives. CRKT's McGinnis models are pretty impressive, both in materials and design quality.
