Civilizations create knives.Derived cutlery styles are individual and linked to the culture, ethnicity and geographic domain of the people.Philippines vibrant cutlery history is as varied as its indigenous people. A Filipino knife of the Moro people is a Barong. Barongs are wide, leaf-shaped blades. They come in all sizes, long and short, but commonly have thick curving bellies angling downward and aligning the wrist with the cutting edge.
Championing ethnic-influenced knifemaking is artist Ed Schempp. A curious world wanderer, Ed is also an esteemed metallurgist, Damascus maker, wheat farmer and knife designer. Hes crafted several stylized ethnic folders with Spyderco, the latest based on the Barong. A pronounced spine-cusp and choil indent give great control over the wide and stable blade, designed originally for controlling vegetation and personal safety. The blade is VG-10 and ground fully-flat. Its G-10 handle is foliage green with a Michael Walker LinerLock®, full- length internal liners and an ambidextrous tip-up clip.

| Customer Reviews: Excellent feel in hand. February 2, 2010 Freezerburn (Florida) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
First of all, the knife comes out the box hair shaving sharp. The VG-10 Steel holds a excellent edge, easy to bring back to factory edge by stropping. So far I've had it over 2 weeks with constant use, no chipping of the blade. It deploys pretty fast, great reach. The Grip on this knife is fantastic; you will be able to tell pretty quickly why spyderco is behind Ed's design. The blade is well centered in the handle and doesn't scrape on the sides when deploying. The blade locks in place tight. It has a little bit of weight to it but doesn't bother me at all. Sticks out of my pocket about a inch from the clip. The handle doesn't tear into my pants that badly. I can deploy and put back in my pocket with one hand. This blade screams of quality and Filipino heritage. I use this knife as a Every Day Carry option from cutting boxes, opening packages, cutting fruit* and other food prep task.
*According to Ed VG-10 (also known as V-Kin-10 in Japan) steel was developed in Japan for Fruit tree farmers so they can slice into fruit without tearing the cell was when they wanted to slice for a good cross section of the fruit because of the micro grain edge.
