| Customer Reviews: Great Knife!!! October 14, 2007 Darren W. Brown (Houston, Texas USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This knife is outstanding! I've been searching for a light-weight, full-size, folder with a clip. This knife is built to be light. It's an easy "carry" knife because of this. It's got the "fast release" knob on the back of the blade, as well as the dual-sided thumb release knobs.
And this knife is generally sold for under $30. You can't go wrong.
Evolution of the pocket knife March 24, 2006 Scott Burright (Laramie, WY USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Knife fans are down on Gerber ever since they got bought out by Fiskars. It's hard for me to see why. I have several, and for the money, I can't find better knives. The Evo is one more bargain I'm happy to stick in my pocket.
It's certainly a wicked-looking knife, all businesslike matte black with a long, slim handle. By flicking the quillion, I can deploy this blade more quickly and easily than any other knife I have except for assisted openers like the Kershaw Ken Onion Blur. The look and feel is much like a switchblade, albeit not a cheap one.
Underneath the intimidating looks and the "tactical" label lies a mild-mannered, ergonomic pocket knife. The handle feels absolutely natural, and the blade is just barely "shaving" sharp out of the box. I can't address how this blade will hold an edge under heavy use, but I don't buy a knife like this to cut up boxes all day. For that, there is this thing called a box cutter, and I'll save my Gerber's edge for when I really need it. Still, given the blade's geometry and what it's made of, I find it hard to imagine that it won't take and hold an edge as well as any comparable knife *if sharpened properly*. I suspect that improper technique is behind many compaints about knives that need constant sharpening.
The downside of this knife is that it takes a pretty good yank to unclip it from a jeans pocket. The belly at the end of the pocket clip slots right into one of the holes in the handle, making for a mighty tight hold that can cause you to fumble the knife if you're trying to draw it quick. I have a similar but slightly smaller Gerber, the SLG 3.25, with slick carbon fiber handles that slide in and out of pocket with ease. I can probably loosen the clip on the Evo, but I wish it weren't necessary.
The aggressive look and feel of the Evo could make it a target for bored legislators looking to impose pointless bans on ordinary tools, and Gerber isn't helping matters by calling the Evo "tactical." I swear, if lawmakers want to stop knife crimes, they'll have to ban kitchen knives and screwdrivers, because that's the kind of knife criminals tend to grab, not yuppie knives like the Evo. But that's another rant. For now, you can get the Evo at K-merde for $30, and it's worth every penny, no matter what the knife snobs say.
